I’ve been in the industry for just a little while now, so I thought that it was timely to publish my 3 Steps to Start a Successful Web Design Business.
So, if you are still reading this post, it means you are thinking about starting your own Web Design Business.
In fact, to find this post, you were probably searching in Google for “How To Start a Successful Web Design Business” . . . .
If so, then please keep reading as I have a pleasant surprise for you later in this article. But one thing that I am not trying to do here is to sell you a program on how to start your own website business!
Start a Successful Web Design Business
It has sorta become the trendy business to be in these days, and so many people are jumping in with little or no experience or understanding of what they are getting into.
You’ve been told that WordPress is dead easy to use, and maybe you have even built a website or two and thought it was pretty straight forward to do . . . and it is up to a point.
So let me tell you that the pit-falls are not always that obvious.
So here is the first of my 3 Steps to Start a Successful Web Design Business!
You should first find out . .
STEP 1: Are you suited to the business?
Or perhaps, more particularly, which part of the business are you best suited to.
The first step is to understand what going into business is all about . . . which is a helluva lot more than doing what you were doing in someone else’s office last week, but now in your own office this week!
So many people just go into business from having a job, not realising the full scope of what they are getting into. Here’s what you gotta do, over and over . . .
- Come up with creative ideas
- Get your brand out into the market place
- Build a team that supports you, (otherwise you’ll be doing all this yourself)
- Broker the deals
- Provide the customer support and followup that is needed, (the hand holding, etc)
- Show patience while keeping things on track
- Manage the finances and cash flow
- Understand the systems needed to make it all work, including the technical coding stuff
. . . among other things.
Now, if you think that each of these roles if widely diverse, even opposite in some cases, then you are definitely correct.
In fact, these roles are the exact opposite of each other in terms of the personality and temperament required to execute them successfully; and enjoyably . . . (after all, surely you’re not going in to business to be miserable!). Enjoying it should be fundamental to Start a Successful Web Design Business.
And as a business owner, you will be required to fulfill each of these roles in your new business, (whether that be web design or any other business that you choose to take up).
Categorically and without reservation
So, I am going to say categorically and without reservation that THE most important step that you can take before starting your web design business, is to find out which of these functions best suits you.
And then find a way to focus on delivering that in your business . . . in other words, doing that part that you enjoy most . . . while finding ways to have other people do the other stuff.
What interests your more?
- Promoting yourself
- Managing people
- Networking, meeting people
- Liaising with clients, incl. upset clients
- Managing accounts and bills
- Writing proposals
- Managing work and projects
- Providing solutions
- Writing computer code – building websites
And which interests you least? Which will cause you the most frustration and nightmares in your new website business? Because they are all part of the process to Start a Successful Web Design Business.
Now, just because you are a brilliant website coder (programmer) does NOT, repeat NOT, mean that your should automatically start a website business.
Notice that only one of the points in this list said anything what-so-ever about building websites or writing code.
So which are you?
By now, you probably already have a bit of an idea which functions in business you would prefer to be doing.
But why not find out for sure . . . so that you do not make any mistakes.

The point is this . . .
- Maybe you should be a web designer and programmer.
- Maybe you should be a sales person, which you can still do in the web industry.
- Maybe you should be a customer support person.
- Maybe you should manage the books and accounts.
- Maybe you should network and build JV relationships.
- Maybe you should be a project manager.
But, it is highly unlikely that you should or could optimally be all of them.
Having said that, most small business start that way and have to run that way because there is no other way to get started.
This is where I usually say . . .
