It’s time for me to have a little rant about one of my pet hates . . .
Badly Named pdf Downloads
There are still some instances where a pdf document download is a viable or at least satisfactory way of disseminating information about your product or service on the internet.
However, in this day and age, there are many options that are more up to date . . . depending on the circumstances and your marketing strategy.
If you currently have pdf downloads on your website, let’s talk about whether that is the best strategy and what the options are. Give me a call or email me now.
. . . but back to the story . . .
I find my way to someone’s website and there is a link that says something like:
“Get more information here”
But when I click on the link, it turns out to be a pdf download.
Not a big deal, I suppose, but I would have preferred to be told this before starting the download.
It would be quite simple to add a pdf icon next to the link and change the words to something like:
“Click here to download our brochure”
Better still, make sure that the text includes some benefits that I will find attractive to make me WANT to download this pdf, like:
“Top 10 Ways that XYZ solves all your
accounting issues – Download Now”
That really will increase your download rate, and stop you wasting those download opportunities!
But what I find REALLY annoying about pdf downloads is the file names. Who thinks up these names? Are they randomly generated by a computer?
So, when I go to my downloads folder to look for the file that I wasn’t expecting to download but did, the only way that I can find the file is to sort the folder by create date and look for the latest file.
So, how could that be made easier, and less annoying for your customers . . .
Match the file name to the subject matter
If the document is about the Top 10 Ways to Save Money on Fuel, then please call the document by that name . . .
By the way . . .
these are actual ebooks that we have written for clients recently!
Match the file name to the website
At least match the file name to the website name, so that I can easily find it . . .
If the website is golf-cars.com.au – then make the pdf file name something like:
Any little thing that you can do to help your customers will ultimately result in more revenue in your website and in your business.
And that’s what we all want, isn’t it!
So what should you do now?
Check if you have pdf or ebook downloads on your website.
Check if the file names are helpful or confusing for the people that will download them.
