During a recent phone call, I had to ask the question . . . “First things first – Are you ready for Google?”
We have noticed an increase in the number of calls from people wanting to get SEO, (Search Engine Optimisation), for their website.
One caller in particular repeated the phrase “when we get on page one of Google” so many times in our conversation that I thought he was a broken record LOL
Even after I explained at some length why he was not yet ready for this, he just kept on repeating the phrase . . .
It’s as if Google somehow had brainwashed him to think that the holy grail of “Page 1” would solve all of his business and financial problems.
Just being on page 1 of Google certainly can make a difference to the fortunes of a business.
But in this case, it was putting the proverbial horse before the cart.
- Like putting a huge billboard out the front of his shop but not yet having order pads or a cash register in the shop.
- Like placing a Yellow Pages advert, but not yet having the phone connected.
- Like generating telemarketing leads, but having no sales person available to go out to the sales appointments.
What the new website was missing
He was very proud of the new website that they had just finished, apparently at some effort and in some detail.
But while it was a nice enough looking website, the design was not all that amazing.
And it was missing some F.M.B. – Fundamental Marketing Basics.
It was missing a Call To Action and a way of capturing email addresses from visitors who might be interested in buying his product at some other time, but just not right now.
There was no offer or enticement to engage visitors in the website content.
But still, he kept on repeating the phrase . . .
“when we get on page 1 of Google everything will be fine and we will be making heaps of sales“
So, what if he did manage to get on page 1 of Google and had lots of traffic to his website?
How many opportunities for sales would he miss by not having his website prepared to take best advantage of all that traffic that they might get?
The fact is that not everyone coming to your website is going to buy on the first visit . . . in fact, most will not.
Many will not even pick up the phone to make an inquiry . . . they are just looking around at this stage.
So your website must be set up in a way that makes it very easy for people to find what they are looking for . . .
Easy to make a purchase if/when they are ready . . .
And also make it easy and attractive to stay in touch with them until they are ready to make a buying decision.
Think about the last time you made a purchase.
One that you had not made before, or with a supplier that you had not purchased from before.
Or one of those larger purchases that you make infrequently.
Did you just go in and place your order?
No, you probably did a lot of research comparing products.
You probably went back to the shop a number of times before committing to the sale.
You probably had a few phone calls with the salesperson.
Children know this !
Have you noticed that children all about this . . .
They know that when they ask for something and get told “no” the first time, that they just have to ask again
. . . and again
. . . . and again
. . . . . and again
. . . . . . and again
. . . . . . . and again
. . . . . . . . and again
. . . And every time they ask increases their chances of getting what they want – getting a result.
It’s the same with sales.
And your website is, or should be, all about sales – getting a result.
So make sure that your website is set up to do this.
Not sure how to do it?
