In business, you just gotta get over yourself!
Hey, I know that I do this too, so I know what I am talking about.
I go to make a call and I think to myself . . . “Oh, it’s too early in the week”, (or too late).
“Maybe it is too soon after my last call.”
“It’s OK, this call can wait until next week.”
“I’ll call after the stock arrives on Friday.”
“This other paper needs to be done. Why don’t I just do that first.”
etc. etc. etc.
Deny it as much as you like, but almost all of us do this in one form or another, at one time or another.
It’s often labled as “Call Reluctance” – the reluctance to make a phone call.
It’s quite easy to justify putting off making a phone call or a sales visit.
And it shows up in the bottom line of your business. Fewer sales . . . less profits.
If you are the business owner, then bear in mind that your staff and team members may be doing this too.
Why do we put up these Blocks?
There are as many reasons for why we use these excuses as there are excuses!
Some of them are:
- You are not confident about your product
- You are not confident about your self, your skills, your knowledge
- The big one – you don’t like the possibility of rejection – of someone saying NO to you
- You feel that your time or needs are less important than the person you need to call
And the list goes on.
Some of these can be a bit challenging to overcome.
You may even benefit from some outside assistance from a coach or even just a friend with a good listening ear.

7 Ideas to Get past your Call Reluctance Blocks
If you are experiencing Call Reluctance, then try one or all of these 7 tips . . .
1. Set goals
It is easy to put off taking action if you don’t have a goal to work towards.
Doesn’t matter whether it is business, sport or a hobby. Having a goal gives you a reason to take action.
2. They’re just like you
In any encounter, it is good to know that the other person often is just as scared or uncertain as you think that you are.
They are not going to bite your head off.
And often they are looking forward to your call because it will help solve their problems.
3. A different outlook
There is always a way to turn a negative outlook into a positive.
Another way to look at this is that every time you get a NO, you are so much closer to getting the next.
Regardless of whether this call results in a YES or NO, you are closer to another sale.
4. Take stock of yourself
If you are lacking confidence about your skills, knowledge, abilities, then stop and take stock of yourself.
Put down in writing all of the things that you have achieved; the skills that you needed to do them.
This is where a friend or coach can help, because often we cannot see this in ourselves. That’s why we are having the difficulty in the first place.
5. Get into Action
The best remedy for not taking action is to Take Action.
A car uses more fuel going from a standing stop. But once moving, the momentum helps to carry it forward. In fact, it becomes hard to stop.
So, just get into Action. Get the first call done and see how your actions start rolling in an unstoppable way.
6. Your clients and prospects need you
If you feel that you are imposing on people by making a call, remember that people need your services.
Your product or service is a valuable addition their lives or their business.
(If you don’t really believe that, then it is time to change your thinking, or change your product or service.)
Especially where they have initiated an inquiry with you, you have an obligation to help them as best you can.
7. Get over yourself
In the beginning, I used this phrase somewhat cheekily.
But really, that’s what it all boils down to.
Just get over your own fears and blocks, and get on with things.
Not always as easy done as said.
But when you realise the problem, you can overcome the problem and it is easier to do with some help.
Well, that is quite simple really!
