This is a real life story of how a business missed a sales opportunity by not having their own website.
We were travelling to a destination where we needed to buy a meal.
We thought of a place that we had not been to before; but wanted to try, let’s call it . . .
the XYZ Tavern.
We wanted to find out what was on their menu, so we went to Google and typed in XYZ Tavern.
Unfortunately, they had no website listed on Google, (because they had no website).
However there were a lot of directory listings for this business, including one at Pubs Online, as well as many other trade directory listings.
We opened the listing for pubs online and there was just one review there.
Unfortunately for that business, it was a bad review. In fact, a very bad review.
Now, I have already written about the dubious value of these online reviews, especially where there is only one review.
However, my travelling friend did not want to go to that venue, and so they missed out on 2 lunch sales.
If they had their own website, Google would have picked that up and showed it to us, most likely as the first listing based on their business name and location.
Most certainly, I would have gone to their website first to see what they had to say.
Hopefully, I would have seen their menu as well as some good testimonials.
Quite likely, we would not even have looked at the Pubs Online listings, and therefore not seen the bad review.
And we would have gone to that venue for our lunch.
So . . .
How how many other prospective customers are being turned away from this business
Because they do not have a website to present their story
And because of that one bad review?
And how many prospective customers are you turning away by having either:
- no website, or
- a domain name with no website published on it, or
- a website that does not adequately tell your story
It is surprising how many businesses register a domain name but then do not put a website on it.
They obviously do not yet see the potential marketing value of their website, and the negative impact of not having one.
These days, having a website is almost like a rite of passage for a business.
If you do not have a website, your business is seen as somewhat less than complete – less than professional – not in the market.
And yet, a really small business can have a smart looking website that makes them look as big and as professional as the big players in the market.
Leaving it up to others
But the worst option of all is leaving your online presence in the hands of other websites, including:
- trade directories and
- feedback sites.
Because you literally have no control over how your business is being presented online.
You have no control over what is said about your business.
And worst of all, you have no access to the people who find you online in this manner.
So, whatever you do, take control of your online presence and have your own website – even if it is only a cheap or free DIY website to start with.
That is much better than having nothing at all, and you can grow into a more professional website as your business grows.
Well, that is quite simple really!
