Are you maximising your marketing opportunities?
Looking over the balcony of our apartment in Paris, I saw this delivery van with advertising on the roof.
It got me thinking about the many simple and obvious marketing and advertising opportunities that most businesses miss out on.
Many businesses with a delivery van have sign writing on the sides of the van. It is a logical marketing step.
But if your deliveries are mainly in high rise areas, people in the buildings cannot see the sign writing on the side of the van. So the roof of the van presents an excellent opportunity to reach people living or working in the high rise buildings.
While this does not apply to every business, it should get you thinking about other possibilities for marketing your business.
Do all of your marketing materials show all of your business details?
- email address
- street address
What about other paperwork that you send or hand out, such as
- packing slips
- appointment reminders
- cash register receipts
Do these documents also contain a marketing message and changing offers?
For cafes, restaurants and smaller shops, do your cash register receipts contain a sales message, or a return offer to bring people back to your shop again?
Do your email programs add a signature to every email that you send which shows all of your business details, (as listed above), and perhaps a prompting question to get people thinking about your product or service again?
e.g. my email signature file includes a post script and a invitation.
The post script is simple, but it does prompt comments and enquiries . . .
b.t.w. Is your website really working for you ?
. . . and below that is an invitation to subscribe to our newsletter.
This is a strategy that is most powerful and yet most ignored.
What about packaging? Does your brand and marketing message show clearly on these?
- carry home bags
- takeaway cups
Using blank or generic packaging can be cheaper, but are you missing sales as a result?
The cost of branded packaging with a strong sales message could well be exceeded by the sales generated by the messages.
Are you repeatedly loosing biros from your sales counter? Why not make the most of this and use printed promotional biros so that the cost of the “stolen” biros give you an ongoing sales and marketing benefit.

Consider putting your marketing message onto drink coasters. It does not really matter if your business is a restaurant or not. I saw promotional coasters for a taxi service in a hotel bar – what a great synergy.
Make it easy for people to find your place of business by prominently showing your street number on the fence or building.
Keep foliage clear of your signs.
OK, so you got great signs in prominent places. But so often the garden grows up around the signs and conceals them.
Get a gardener, or spend a couple of minutes yourself, cutting back the offending branches.
Are you a service provider, like a gardener or plumber? There is no tangible product or packaging on which to show your branding. Sure, you could leave a business card or invoice, but they often get thrown out.
So leave something that is going to be kept because it has some value to the customer beyond your contact details. Suggestions include:
- fridge magnet
- printed biro
- coffee mug
So . . . there are some ideas to get you thinking.
Some seem pretty obvious, and yet the get overlooked or sidelined for later.
Take action on just one of these now, and you will see results in your business.
Well, that is quite simple really!
