Yes, it’s an oldie but a goodie – the “please pay my private courier agent” Paypal SCAM !
Here is how it works.
And if you are selling a car or camper trailer online, you should watch out for this one . . .
I’ve heard of this one many times, but never came this close to it.
But this week I did. And everyone lived to tell the tale and warn others.
A friend of mine was selling a camper trailer online, where he had listed it in the popular “for sales” listings.
It starts with an sms from the enquirer, which becomes an email.
Here is the first email from the villain of the story . . . William – “the Buyer” . . .

Great reading from you. I believe you must have buyer’s interested in the purchase . I am currently in the middle of work duty. Am buying this for my Dad.
To start with, I can only make the payment via PayPal because it’s very safe and secure for both of us. In case you don’t have a paypal account I’ll advice you to register for one at www.paypal.com.au . I won’t be available to come for inspection due to my present location because I’ll still be at my work location. I have a private pick-up person that will contact you in-order to handle the pick-up at any location of your choice once the payment is completed.
Your asking price is pretty cool with me.. I’ll like you to tell me the present condition and photos and also send your paypal email address and so that I can make the payment if you wish to proceed. Await your response asap. Thanks !!
All sounds rosy, and this is where you start to get excited that you may have sold your vehicle / trailer.
My friend replies that Paypal is OK and that he will remove the for sale listing when the money arrives.
The next email from William – “the Buyer” says . . .
Hi, The response I have just received from my private courier was that they won’t be able to come for the pick up unless a commission fee of $950 is paid first in order for them to be able to schedule a date and time for the pickup to be made. My private courier agent headquarters is in the CHINA and all commission payments made for pickup from anywhere in the world is sent to their head quarters in the China and the only form of payments they accept is Western Union Money Transfer.
I will add the said $950 to the money I will send through PayPal Account to your bank account. As soon as i have made the payment, I will email you to inform you, please I will need you your help to send the money to my pick up agent Hq in China through western union money transfer. This can be done from any western union post office, as there is always western union money transfer section in most post office.
I would have done it myself but there is no post office on the ship and i tried to pay online (www.westernunion.com) but i will need a credit card which i didn’t bring aboard the ship. So i have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees on trust, I’m a little incapacitated….I will be making the full payment as soon as possible. I will appreciate your help here….
Thanks for been nice and considerate about this.
All very trusting on the Buyer’s part.
To send you the extra money for you to send on to his “private courier agent”.
William – “the Buyer” – then emails to say that he has made the payment . . .
I just want to inform you that i have just completed the instant payment, i hope you must have been notified in your email about the payment i made through PayPal, Pls you can check your email ([email protected]******.com) INBOX OR SPAM Folders for confirmation of payment and to confirm your payment, I have just make the full total payment of $13,990, i have also decided to add the amount of $1,000 which i paid through PayPal, so you can now send $950 to my private courier agent via Western Union so he can be able to come for the pick up. I will need you to send the $950 to my private courier agent Headquarters where they normally confirm any commission payment to via Western Union Transfer at any Post office near you to complete the transfer, i added extra $50 cover the western union charges which shouldn’t be more that $20-40 but just to be sure i added $50, Here is my private courier agent Headquarters info needed to get the money sent through western union transfer:
Address: West Jiangtai Road,
Zip Code: 100027,
Please kindly email the necessary details to PayPal :The MTCN Number, which you will be given at the western union after the $950 has been sent and also mail PayPal the sender’s name and address used to send the money through western union as well… Awaiting for your swift response asap.. Thanks !!
And sure enough, the next thing that my friend receives is an email from Paypal saying that the funds are in his Paypal account.
Oh, but there is a little hitch, because the funds will not be released because . . .
Issues with this transaction But On Hold.
This is to inform you that you are required to send the sum of $950.00 AUD to the address below via Western Union Money Transfer and get back to us with the relevant information which you will be provided with after the money has been sent, you are requested to email us the MTCN(Money Transfer Control Number), Sender’s name and address used to make the transfer before the total funds can be credited. As soon as we have received these information from you, we will credit the total sum of $13,990.00 AUD to your PayPal account. Below is the address where the money is to be sent to using western union money transfer.
And you are Soooo close to getting those fund released that are already in your Paypal account and waiting for you to take action.
Because there are no funds in your Paypal account to start with.
It is a dummy or spoof email that never came from Paypal.
And as soon as you send that cheque for $950, you have as good as done your dough.
If you are not sure about an email that looks like it comes from Paypal, then contact Paypal and ask them about it.
They will generally respond within 1-2 days.
Well, that is quite simple really!
