Top 3 are actually paid ads
Most business owners know that certain parts of the newspaper page are more expensive to advertise on because they magically get more reading attention.
By virtue of position on the page, the reader tends to see them more often, more easily – it catches the reader’s attention more.
So, what about the internet you ask . . .
Well you might be forgiven for thinking that it would be the same thing . . .
And of course, you would be exactly right!
Google
This article points to a study that Clicks On Google Ads Are Nearly Double Organic Clicks For Commercial Searches.
What it is saying is that more people tend to click more on the paid Google ads, (called Google Adwords), than on organic searches.

Is it just that people don’t realise these are paid ads?
Or is it even simpler than that?
Is it that, like the position of newspaper ads, the eye is naturally drawn to the parts of the screen where Google has strategically placed it’s paid advertising.
Let’s face it, they are not going to put their paid advertising in places where it will get lower results, are they?
What’s to learn from this?
Paid advertising
Paid advertising on Google is “more likely to be seen”, and so the money per click that is paid by advertisers for Google Adwords can be worthwhile.
Having said that, some people, myself included, tend to avoid the Adwords because we know it is paid advertising.
So that can backfire – but at least no click means no pay.
Apply to your website
A more valuable lesson can be learnt from this though, and applied to your website.
Take notice of where Google says people focus most attention, and then put your most important message(s) on those parts of your website pages.
Pretty simple really . . . but the number of times that we see websites that do not follow this simple rule . . .
So where does Google place most of its advertising?
- Across the top
- Down the right hand column
- At the very bottom of the page
Simple really.
