Is it not time that we were Tracking the Trackers?
Every time that you go online, you leave a trail of information that is being tracked by dozens of websites, most of which you do not know about.
Worried about giving your email address to one website? That should be the least of your worries in this day and age!
“We are not even 2 bites into breakfast and there are already nearly 25 sites that are tracking me.”
Web tracking is not evil per se, but you have the right to know who is collecting your information and . . . where your private information is being held and used.
If you have any interest in your privacy online, you should watch this short TED video presented by Gary Kovacs.
Gary Kovacs is the CEO of the Mozilla Corporation, where he directs the development of Firefox. Read his full bio here.
So . . .
It used to be just a case of do not put your email address in any strange websites!
But a few short years later, it has gone way beyond that.
And again . . . this is not necessarily bad.
But we should be aware of it.
With that awareness, we can be more conscious of how we are being marketed to by the big companies that collect and/or pay for this information!
Almost every key stroke that you make on a computer is telling someone something about you:
- your age,
- your preferences,
- your relationships,
- your activities,
- your attitudes,
- your location,
- your habits,
- your goals,
- your aspirations,
- your desires,
- your financial status,
- this list will fill pages . . .
. . . and I’m not sure that there is anything that you can do about your information being collected online – short of becoming a hermit and living in isolation from the rest of the world.
Sometimes that seems like an attractive option, but generally not all that practical.
Anyway . . . hope that you enjoy the short TED video presented by Gary Kovacs.
