I saw a post on Facebook just recently that said “Go offshore and get a website that is cheap as chips.”
I had a good laugh to myself because when you do this,
PRICE is less than half of the story
Here is the rest . . .
These days it is becoming common knowledge that offshore resources can be much cheaper to buy than locally based resources.
After all, wasn’t that the whole attraction of duty-free shopping when you travel overseas?
This is evidenced in the proliferation of the cheapie, $2 shops that sell a wide variety of goods at supposedly very cheap prices.
An interesting thing to remember is that these shops used to be known as $1 or Dollar Shops.
And many of the stock items are now much more than $2, so they have also fallen victim of greed or inflation or both.
While these businesses do provide a useful service, there is a reason why their price is so much lower.
The product quality is lower!
Sure, some of the products are OK – but some just fall apart after a couple of uses and some are not suited for the intended purpose.
They might be cheaper to buy,
but are they cheaper to use?
So, back to the story about websites . . .
Remember dealing with offshore call centres back in the 1990’s?
Everyone hated it with a passion. It was a nightmare because of their poor English skills.
Imagine dealing with that every day while trying to get a website built.
Call centres have recognised these problems and trained their people, or moved to English speaking countries.
But most offshore web workers have not had that training so their English skills are rudimentary at best.
Culture and Tradition
In these countries, ties to family and tradition are highly valued.
This is an admirable trait.
Except, of course, when there is a Village Festival or Ceremony and they disappear for days or weeks at a time.
This usually happens without notice, and regardless of the state of progress on your website project.
You just sit there and wait for them to come back.
No Verbal Communication
You still cannot beat verbal communication for accuracy.
You get instant feedback on the message you are trying to convey, so that you can correct instantly.
This seems even more important when there is a native language barrier.
Most offshore workers still do not have a microphone on their computers, so verbal communication is virtually impossible.
And even when they do, their accents are often so broad that they are nearly impossible to understand.
How do I know?
We have experimented with utilising offshore resources in the past.
We found that while we could save some cash, the other issues were problematic to a successful project.
Our clients like to talk face to face with the person designing a website.
And at Hotpink Websites, that is what you get.
Save some cash?
You might save some cash going offshore.
You might even get a reasonable result eventually.
And you might have to get your website done again.
And you will certainly spend a lot of your time personally project managing.
What is your time worth?
The end result is that it will probably cost nearly the same, or even more, than having a local company, like Hotpink Websites, build a website for you.
Fortunately . . .
Most sensible business owners understand that their time is better spent in growing and developing their business, generating new sales and more revenue, than focusing on tasks like the technical details of building a website.
If you seriously want to leverage and grow your business, then seriously, consider using a local website developer like Hotpink Websites, instead of going offshore.
What should you do now?
- What is your time worth?
- Do you want to get stuck in the technical details of website building?
- With someone who does not speak your language?
- Want some help or ideas? Just contact us at Hotpink Websites now.
At the cost of one failure, the wise learn the lesson for the whole of life.
